How to Deliver Engaging Sessions for Adults

Expand your knowledge to support positive experiences for adults and ensure sustained participation

UK Coaching was formerly known as Sports Coach UK. We changed our name after expanding our support as an organisation.

You will:

  • learn about new participants’ needs, including how to build their self-confidence, self-esteem and motivation
  • increase your knowledge about how best to meet the needs of different participant groups, helping you to recruit and retain new participants to your sessions
  • find out about the ‘C’ system of coaching and learn how to include each ‘C’ element in your practice through practical examples
  • be able to use relevant adapted planning material for both longer-term and session planning.

Understanding and implementing the ‘C’ system framework (connection; confidence; character; creativity; caring and compassion; competence) has been a game-changer for many coaches and is an essential component of this workshop, which will help you understand how your coaching fits into a much wider agenda than sport.

You will receive a copy of How to Deliver Engaging Sessions: Developing Adults and Young People Through Sport book at the workshop to guide you in your future coaching.

Each section of the 50-page book contains thought-provoking questions for you to consider using self-reflection and diagnosis of your own methods.

There are spaces where you are encouraged to set short, medium and long-term goals for achieving the good practice outlined in the book.

Each of the sections expanding on the ‘C’ system will contain explanations of the relevance of the ‘C’ being examined, and the summary will focus on the three phases of developing, sustaining and rejoining participation.

What Coaches Think

I really enjoyed the course and the supporting resource is very good and helpful. I came away with plenty of practical ideas to implement in my sessions, which have made a big difference to the way I coach. As a result, the girls have been able to take more ownership and have felt more involved and engaged in the sessions. This has led to them having a more enjoyable experience, with their levels of enthusiasm and motivation increasing. Most importantly, though, they continue to participate.

  • have barriers to overcome to be regular participants; for example, costs, confidence or misconceptions about current sport offer.

Accompanying Learning Materials

50-page How to Deliver Engaging Sessions: Developing Adults and Young People Through Sport resource booklet for each learner to take away to deepen their knowledge or refer to.

We will do most of the hard work. We will send you the accompanying learning materials; our trainer will run the session and we will email your learners their certificates after the event.

But here are the things you will need to do to ensure your learners have an enjoyable experience.

Book a space

A meeting room with enough space for the group to split into smaller groups (at least 12 x 12 metres). All venues must be accessible for all participants, including those who may have additional needs (eg wheelchair users).

Communicate with your learners and take bookings

We will market the event on our site if you want us to. But you will also need to invite your people or advertise the event through your own communications. You will need to make sure it’s easy for people to book on the event and you will need to take bookings and issue booking confirmations.

Arrange equipment

Screen or laptop and data projector, flip chart, paper and pens are required. Internet access would be beneficial.
